Coming Back
I know that many of you have wondered what happened to my Substack since losing my reelection to city council in Mission Viejo. I debated about returning to this posting, but feel that those who cared deserve an answer versus just ghosting y’all.
First the election. While not winning I was able to also have impact on the other candidate not winning as well. It was currently revealed his antisemitic rants and he needed to go. https://nypost.com/2022/05/26/california-gop-candidate-greg-raths-goes-on-anti-semitic-rant/
There remains one more serving council member who has stated remarks against Jews and Hispanics that needs to go from council as well. But now is not the time for that.
We split the R vote in the district, and the winner only got 40% of the vote. So, she is vulnerable in the next election. Council still has majority philosophy and if we continue with our city’s strong staff, we are good to go until the next election. Then you may begin to worry as D money smells blood in the water.
Would I have loved to win? Of course. I so enjoyed my 8 years on council and feel I contributed to the betterment of the city. But at 76 years old, my time on council has seen its retreat. Retreat signals the end of the official duty day. But I do look forward to writing more and I hope you shall continue to engage in what I have to say.
The second development shortly after the election was my diagnosis with multiple myeloma. Since late December I have continued with weekly chemotherapy and perhaps now only have another month to go. The results have been more than promising and through weekly blood testing, we are seeing vast improvement. I look forward to hearing that I require no more chemo and can get back to traveling with my wife and fly fishing for weeks at a time.
Also, happy to report the birth of another grandchild. The second boy to David and Maritza Sachs. So many trips planned to visit both Roman and new Adrian Sachs.
I look forward to writing about the amazing transformation in our country from logic to illogic in a following article. I have used my chemo time to read and reflect on the weaponizing of federal bureaus, the socializing of transgender dysphoria and education priorities of the left in our schools.
Finally in this post, I would like you all to consider a proposal by newly elected council member Bob Ruesch. He talks about using trees as shade structures in our parks versus expensive tarp covering for shade structures. You can fill a park with trees for $16,000 or pay over $160,000 for one shade structure. We can plant trees in 10 play areas for the price of one shade structure. I support this idea 100%. Planting trees ahead of playground renovations makes sense and yes, staff can certainly understand where to plant the trees for maximum effectiveness. Let Bob know your thoughts at rruesch@cityofmissionviejo.org
Thank you for taking the time to read this update. I am grateful for your support, and I look forward to continuing to engage with you through my writing. Take care and be well.
